Barry is motivated by seeing people with disabilities doing "the impossible." He also wants to encourage and motivate both disabled and able bodied people to realize that anything can be accomplished if they put their mind and body to it. Barry hopes that the Team Everest expedition receives a reasonable amount of publicity so he can get organizations to back his next project for people with disabilities. He hopes the expedition's success will help him launch a sports complex project.

For the past two years, Barry has participated in the Disabled American Veterans and Veteran Affairs Winter Sports Clinic in Aspen, Colorado. He is quadriplegic and works as the Community Integration Specialist at the Center on Independent Living. He and his wife, Dee, and two younger children, Ashley and Evan, live in San Antonio, Texas. Their oldest son, Barry Jr., is going to school in Pennsylvania to become an Occupational Therapist.
