Janis received his undergraduate degree at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He completed a pre-doctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health - National Cancer Institute studying how the body's immune system combats cancer. He completed medical school at the University of Wisconsin in 2001 and is currently doing his Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Chicago. Janis was a member of the 2001 "Anything is Possible" Mt. Everest expedition, treating everything from altitude illness to diarrhea to broken bones.

Janis is an avid hiker and camper who has enjoyed the outdoors since he was a child. He attributes his adventurous nature to his Latvian father who recently walked the border of Latvia with a tent, sleeping bag and a topographical map (2000 kilometers!). Janis recently made a camping circumnavigation of Lake Michigan and was married to his lovely wife, Nikki. They live in Chicago.
