NATIONAL MEDIA FOCUS ON TEAM EVEREST ’03
Austin Climber Gary Guller to Lead Unique Team to Mount Everest
in 2003
AUSTIN, TEXAS March 25, 2002
The March 25th issue of Time Magazine and EverestNews.com highlighted
Team Everest ‘03 and Expedition Leader Gary Guller. The Coalition
of Texans with Disabilities (CTD) kicked off the dramatic 18 month
Team Everest ’03 campaign in February. The expedition spotlights
the capabilities of people with disabilities and is led by Austin
mountaineer Guller, a climber with only one arm. The event is promoting
50 years of progress in improving the lives of those with disabilities
while paralleling the much-anticipated 50th anniversary of the first
summit of Everest.
"Such early and prominent national exposure is usually an
indicator of ongoing and increasing media coverage. Team Everest
'03 is the type of human interest story that attracts a following
of readers, a situation highly desired by all news organizations,"
said Dr. Max McCombs, media expert and professor at the University
of Texas School of Journalism.
The first stage of Team Everest ’03 was Guller’s summit
of Mt. Kilimanjaro on February 22nd. The campaign will culminate
in a Spring 2003 expedition to the summit of Mt. Everest. Guller
will lead a team of people with diverse disabilities on the three-week
Challenge Trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp at over 17,500 ft. before
himself attempting the 29,035 ft. summit.
The Team Everest ’03 Challenge Trek is generating tremendous
interest. Applications are now available to the public and CTD is
experiencing a high frequency of calls and emails. “We took
the message to the top of Africa that there is unlimited potential
to work, play and have a full life if you live with a disability.
Next we’ll take the message to the top of the Americas, and
finally to the top of the world,” says Guller.
“We are actively seeking sponsorships for this exciting event.
Those who are interested in benefiting from the national media exposure
generated by Team Everest ’03 should contact CTD,” says
Dennis Borel, executive director of CTD.
