COLORADO SPRINGS CLIMBER JOINS EVEREST TEAM
Gary Scott Returns to Mt. Everest
AUSTIN, TEXAS September 25, 2002
International mountaineer Gary Scott has joined the Spring 2003
Team Everest ‘03 Expedition. This will be Scott’s second
attempt on Everest, the first in 1991 without the use of supplemental
oxygen. He has climbed peaks on every continent and holds numerous
speed climbing records and first ascents. Scott is currently writing
his fourth book, “Summit Strategies / The 10 Lessons of the
Mountains.”
The Team Everest ‘03 expedition spotlights the potential
of all people, especially those with disabilities, and is led by
mountaineer Gary Guller, a climber with only one arm. Guller and
Scott will lead a team of 15 individuals with diverse disabilities
on the three-week Challenge Trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp in March
2003 before themselves attempting the summit in May. The Team Everest
‘03 expedition is expected to generate tremendous public interest.
“By working as a team and ascending to the base of the world’s
highest peak, Team Everest ’03 will ‘Challenge the Myth’
that people with disabilities are not strong and capable. We are
going to send a message to the world that there really is unlimited
potential to work, play and have a full life if you live with a
disability. It is time for us to shatter the assumptions and discrimination
still held by so many citizens,” says Scott.
“Gary Scott is a close and trusted friend and I’m
absolutely delighted to have him on the team. He supports the goals
of Team Everest ’03 – to go for your dreams to your
maximum capacity, regardless or your ability or disability,”
says Guller.
