TEXAS GOVERNOR RICK PERRY TO HOLD TEAM EVEREST '03 PRESS CONFERENCE
IN AUSTIN
AUSTIN, TEXAS November 19, 2002
WHO: Governor Rick Perry and Team Everest '03 expedition
leader Gary Guller
WHAT: Team Everest '03 Press Conference
WHEN: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 20, 2002
WHERE: Texas State Capitol in Austin, Governor's Conference
Room on the second floor of the Capital, directly above the front
entrance.
WHY: Gov. Perry will announce his support for the Austin-based
Team Everest '03, an expedition to Everest in Spring 2003 spotlighting
the potential of people with disabilities. He will also announce
that the expedition has been awarded by the Government of Nepal
one of the few coveted climbing permits.
Team Everest ‘03 will be led by Texas mountaineer Gary Guller,
a climber with only one arm. The historic event is promoting 50
years of progress in improving the lives of those with disabilities
while paralleling the 50th anniversary of the first summit of Everest.
Guller will lead this unique team of people with a variety of disabilities,
including those with quadriplegia, paraplegia, and mobility, visual
and hearing impairments, as well as cancer survivors, on the three-week
trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp at 17,300ft before himself attempting
the 29,035ft summit. If he succeeds, Guller will be the first climber
with one arm to summit the world's highest peak.
"Team Everest '03 has a powerful message; it models how society
can open the door of opportunity to all people, regardless of their
ability or disability," says Guller, "Several of our Challenge Trek
members have severe disabilities and they will shatter the stereotypes
of what can be accomplished."
