AUSTIN - December 16 - Janis P. Tupesis, MD has been selected as
lead team physician for the Spring 2003 Team Everest expedition.
Team Everest '03 spotlights the potential of people with disabilities
and is led by Texas mountaineer Gary Guller. Tupesis will serve
as team physician for this historic expedition.
Tupesis received his undergraduate degree at George Mason University
in Fairfax, Virginia. He completed a pre-doctoral fellowship at
the National Institutes of Health - National Cancer Institute studying
how the body's immune system combats cancer. He completed medical
school at the University of Wisconsin in 2001 and is currently doing
his Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Chicago. Janis
was a member of the 2001 "Anything is Possible" Mt. Everest
expedition, treating everything from altitude illness to diarrhea
to broken bones.
"Team Everest '03 has a powerful message; it models how society
can open the door of opportunity to all people, regardless of their
ability or disability. Janis brings to the team enthusiasm for the
goals of Team Everest '03 and the ability to professionally deal
with any medical problems that may arise," says Guller.
The expedition team leaves for Nepal in March 2003. Guller, a mountaineer
who lost his left arm in a climbing accident, will lead a team of
individuals with diverse disabilities on the three-week Challenge
Trek to Everest Base Camp. He and his climbing team will then attempt
the 29,035ft summit. If successful, Guller will become the first
person with one arm to summit the world's highest peak.
"This is an exciting and historic event. I look forward to
the challenges and opportunities that it presents. Gary and the
rest of the Team Everest '03 team are an inspiration to us all,"
says Tupesis.
